“Resilient Coasts” at the University of British Columbia consists of two research projects that aim to improve communities’ capacities to address risks related to the marine and coastal environment. One project, Coastal Hazard Vulnerability Indicators, seeks to characterize the vulnerability and resilience profiles of coastal communities and identify places that are similar. A key goal is to facilitate sharing of information on risk reduction strategies across similar communities. A second project, Maritime Transportation Disruption, seeks to develop resilience strategies for marine transportation systems in the event of emergencies, with a focus on the needs of marine-dependent coastal communities. Both projects are funded by the MEOPAR Network of Centres of Excellence and are initially focused on coastal British Columbia, especially the Strait of Georgia region.
